Run by Mr Ott and Jake Whipp of White Boy, Doodley Squat's first release was the second punk record to come out of DC--and while it may not have been great in technical terms, it had more attitude than a hundred Minor Threats.

What follows is now the truly definitive A number 1 doubleplusgood pressing history of this record: The orange and brown sleeve was very expensive to print. Reviews: Amazingly primitive rock and roll. In terms of influence this is one of the most important hunks of vinyl to come outta DC. Unfortunately it's not a very good record. While this may have been pretty wild and out of control in 1977, compared to the kinda noise coming out of DC even a year later, this doesn't seem very noteworthy. |

Reviews: For some reason I can't help but think that if this were a crummy homemade cassette I'd be going apeshit over it. This doesn't sound like it should be a record--it's got that two guys in a basement with a drum machine and tape recorder vibe to it. What this really brings to mind is industrial music circa 1982: disregard for rock structures, big mean noise, shitty fake drums, overwrought delivery, and not much in the way of audio fidelity. Miles better than the first White Boy record, but still nowhere near what they were capable of at their peak. I need the inserts (or a nice photocopy) for this record. Hook me up! |

Notes: Sleeve was professionally cut/glued. This seems to be the rarest White Boy release, despite there being at least two pressings. I'd guess that the green label version was first. Reviews: Hmm, it's back to the rock sound and rock structure of their first record, but with definite heavy metal leanings--we gots some geeeetar solos here that range from competent cock rock to atonal catastrophes. Living in the Shadows / Be the First One // Kissing at Midnight / Coming Back Home black vinyl Doodley Squat 5, 1983 Lineup: Mr Ott / Jake Whipp / Tommy Carr - drums Recording Info: Notes: Reviews: Damn, this is awful. Really awful. Living in Shadows is a terrible eighties rock song that's about twenty minutes long and doesn't even have a fucking ending. Be the First One is a dreadful new wave dance song. Kissing at Midnight is an awful dance song with fake drums, synth, doubled vocals and jerk off funk guitar. Coming Back Home is only 30 seconds long, but it has the most retarded harmonica part ever. Summary: Awful, awful, terrible, dreadful, awful, retarded. |

Poker Chips // How Safe Are You black vinyl Doodley Squat 6, 1983 Lineup: Mr Ott / Jake Whipp Recording Info: Notes: I had originally thought that the sleeves for this record were hand cut/glued, just based on the amazingly crooked yellow-sleeved version I have, but the green sleeve version shares many of the imperfections of the yellow version, and is obviously machine folded and glued. Reviews: Kinda wild rock guitar, fake drums, cheap synth. It may not stink as much Kissing at Midnight, but it's still a turd. |
